Sinus Infection Treatment

Managing Chronic Sinus Infections in Miami, FL

Sinusitis is characterized by the irritation, swelling, and inflammation of the tissues lining the sinuses—the hollow, air-filled spaces located behind the nose, eyes, cheeks, and forehead. Sinusitis affects about 12% of adults in the United States, resulting in over 30 million diagnoses each year (AAO-HNSF clinical guideline).

Sinus infections can lead to common symptoms such as sinus pain and pressure, nasal congestion, and postnasal drip. In some cases and depending on severity, untreated sinus infections may interfere with daily life, sleep quality, and comfort.

Here at Miami Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers, our team offers sinus evaluation and works with patients to develop personalized treatment plans based on their unique health profile, symptoms, clinical findings, and overall health status.

What Causes Sinusitis?

The sinuses are hollow, air-filled spaces behind the eyes, nose, cheeks, and forehead. They naturally produce mucus to humidify the air we breathe. Sometimes, they become irritated and swollen, trapping mucus and increasing the risk of an infection, known as sinusitis.

Sinusitis may be due to several factors, including allergies, bacterial infections, viral infections (such as the common cold or flu), and structural issues (such as nasal polyps or a deviated septum).

Sometimes, sinus infections can contribute to persistent breathing difficulties and discomfort. A consultation with and an evaluation by an ENT specialist can help you explore potential causes and guide you toward management and treatment strategies.

What Are the Common Symptoms of Sinusitis?

Symptoms of sinus infections vary per patient, but common signs to look out for include:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Facial pain and pressure, particularly around the nose, eyes, cheeks, and forehead
  • Runny nose with thick or yellow mucus discharge
  • Postnasal drip, or mucus dripping down the back of the throat
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Poor sleep quality and fatigue
  • Low-grade fever
  • Halitosis, or chronic bad breath

Not all patients will experience symptoms the same way. Always consult with your healthcare provider for a personalized diagnosis and treatment.

How Is Sinusitis Treated?

There are several ways to treat and manage sinusitis, and it depends on the underlying cause, the severity of the symptoms, and other personal factors. Treatment options may include:

For mild cases: Medications

Some patients with mild sinusitis may experience temporary relief from standard medications, such as:

  • Decongestants
  • Nasal saline rinses
  • Nasal and systemic corticosteroids
  • Mucolytics

While these medications may offer temporary relief, they may not be sufficient for more persistent or chronic cases. Always consult with your medical provider before taking any medication.

For chronic and complex cases: Balloon Sinuplasty

In cases where symptoms persist despite medications, your ENT care provider will explore additional treatment options, which may include procedures like balloon sinuplasty.

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that uses an FDA-cleared device. The procedure may be appropriate for some cases of chronic sinusitis that have not responded to other forms of treatment. Your healthcare provider will assess all treatment options before recommending any procedures, such as this one.

During the procedure, the doctor inserts a small balloon catheter into the affected sinus cavity. Once in place, the balloon is gently inflated, potentially opening blocked sinus passages, then deflated and removed.

As with any procedure, balloon sinuplasty carries potential risks, such as bleeding, infection, or recurrence of symptoms. During your consultation, your care provider will discuss all potential benefits and risks so you can make informed health decisions.

Symptom relief from balloon sinuplasty is not guaranteed, and effectiveness varies based on several individual health factors.

Not all cases of chronic sinusitis will need balloon sinuplasty. A consultation with your healthcare provider can help determine if this is the appropriate treatment for your condition.

Individual results vary, and outcomes are not guaranteed.
